This week’s reading from Acts tells of Peter overseeing the replacing of Judas, who betrayed Jesus and died, with one of the members of the community of believers to be the twelfth apostle. John’s letter addresses how God has borne witness to the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ, and whoever believes God’s witness has the promise of eternal life. In John’s gospel reading, the church hears Jesus’ words on the night before his death—his prayer for his disciples and for all who would believe in him through their words.
