We read in the Book of Acts this week that while Peter shares the good news of Jesus with a Gentile soldier and his family, the Holy Spirit comes upon them, recognizing that the Spirit works in the lives of both Jews and Gentiles. The Apostle John writes in his letter of how God’s children believe that Jesus is the Messiah and the keeping of God’s commandment to love captures the world. In John’s gospel, on the night of his arrest, Jesus delivers a final testimony to his disciples to help them in the days ahead by repeating the most important of all his commands, that they love one another.

At the heart of congregational vitality is the work of God’s Spirit. The book of Acts gives us a stunning picture of what Christ Jesus can do through the work of the Holy Spirit with a handful of scattered, frightened believers. Their faith in the risen Lord and the power of the Holy Spirit transformed this small group into committed, passionate disciples who gave their lives to spreading the gospel from Jerusalem into the rest of the Roman Empire. They boldly proclaimed in word and deed the message of Jesus that extended throughout the whole Empire —and changed the world!
In this time of discernment and discovery related to the calling of a new pastor, Pastor Keith is inviting you to journey through the book of Acts with 28 chapters. It’s been said for good reason that the book of Acts is still being written. God’s Spirit is still at work in, with, and through the church and each disciple. What might be written about Zion in the 29th chapter?
